Negotiators
Much of everyday police work deals with helping people. Communications is the hallmark of a sucessful police officer. When officers have sucessful skills and a situations ends with the least force being used it is the best situation for all.

However sometimes situations including extremely violent acts require special skills and enhanced training. Police negotiators go through extensive training to be sucessful. Officers are volunteers who practice the necessary skills to be able to bring distarught and violent people into custody and help.
A hostage situation is a law-enforcement worst-case scenario, because it places innocent civilians directly in harm's way. . A skilled negotiator must find out what the hostage-taker wants, who he or she is and what it will take to achieve a peaceful outcome, all while ensuring the safety of the hostages and other bystanders.
